Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
PLEASE NOTE THE DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN THE SCHEDULE FOR THIS CLASS POSTED ON JOGUSTINE AND OUR ACTUAL SCHEDULE (which is presented in this course description).

In this course, Übung students will tackle an authentic translation project from German into English, a process that will involve the following basic steps (which the Übung students will carry out, but which a set of Seminar students will manage for the most part!):

Our Class Schedule

Please note that our class schedule will not correspond exactly to the schedule you will find on Jogustine beneath this course description! The correct scheduling information is as follows:

For Übung students enrolled in this Blended Learning course, there will be a total of between five and six required in-class sessions -- all of which will take place on Friday afternoons. Please be aware that a set of four workshops will take place on Friday afternoon early in the semester, all of them run by instructors in the English Department. You will need to be available to attend those four sessions from 2:40-4:10 p.m. in Room 348. The dates for those sessions are: 20.10; 27.10; 03.11; and 17.11.

The remaining one or two class sessions will also take place on Friday afternoons from 1:00-2:30 in Room 348. The dates for those additional required sessions will be determined during the course of the semester. You should be prepared to attend whenever they are scheduled.

The Seminar students enrolled in this course will be managing the translation project themselves. They will be required to attend four 3-hour workshops on Friday afternoons at the beginning of the semester. These workshops will include a) a preliminary 90-minute session from 1:00-2:30 during which project management issues will be discussed and elaborated on. The Seminar students will stay on for the 2:40-4:10 sessions that will also be attended by the Übung students on those four days.

For those weeks of the semester when no required in-class session is planned, Übung students will be responsible for handling their assigned translation and translation-related work independently and/or with partners, while Seminar students will be managing the translation process.

The required in-class sessions will be 90-minute workshops, one each on: project work, terminology management, computer-aided translation (CAT) tools and text revision (editing and proofreading).

Exchange students (with a high level of competence (C1) in both German and English) and auditors are welcome as long as the maximum number of participants has not been reached.

Aus gegebenem Anlaß: This course is designed essentially as preparation for tackling translation and translation-related work after graduation. It is expected that all participants who sign up for this Übung and who wish to receive credit for the course will be be prepared to participate fully, competently and responsibly as members of the translation team. Please note that the ability to work as an empathatic, colloborative and communicative team member will be an essential requirement for passing this course.

Please note the assessment sheets under "additional information". They indicate how
your work will be assessed and graded this semester.
