Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
This course will be a theoretical and practical introduction to the teaching of any language to absolute beginners.

The course will comprise two parts: 1) a theoretical introduction to elementary language teaching, which will take place during our regular class time on 17 & 24 April and on 8 & 15 May. During these sessions, we will be discussing several videos of elementary language classes that you will have viewed at home.

Then comes part 2): an introduction to Farsi, the language of Iran, which will be taught by two native speakers. This part of the course will take place on the first four Saturdays in June (the 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd, to be specific) and from 10:30 a.m. until 15:00.

The teaching methodology to be used is called SCAFLEM (scaffolded language emergence), which has been under development by the course instructor for the past 15 years in Germersheim. We will be considering a number of factors that characterize various teaching methods, including: the role of the teacher and the students in the learning/teaching process; whether to have a class be run in a monolingual or bilingual way; whether to introduce writing from the beginning or not; the role of the student as a holistic entity in the learning process; the role of grammar teaching in the various approaches, etc..

The theoretical sessions of this course will be "flipped", meaning that in-class lectures will be kept to a minimum. Instead, students will view videos at home that will then be discussed in class. (The teacher will provide worksheets to accompany the discussion sessions, sheets that can then be used when you write your written assignment for the semester).

For Übung students, the written assignment will be a short, 3-page report on your learning experiences during the Farsi course.

For Seminar students, the written assignment will be a 15-page report incorporating 1) your reactions to your experiences with the Farsi course and 2) a section in which you relate theories related to foreign language learning to your experiences with the Farsi course.

Course requirements:

There are no particular prerequisites for this course!

Students will be expected to attend class regularly and participate actively in in-class activities. There will be no free days off from class attendance.

Students may miss NO MORE THAN a total of two classes (180 minutes of class time) and only for a very good reason if they wish to receive credit for the course. Absences must be followed up within one week by a doctor's note.

Students will also be expected to actually view the assigned videos at home that are assigned to them.

The written assignments to be written following the end of the Farsi course are to be submitted in digital form no later than Friday, 6 July.

You should NOT print out your assignment. Instead, it is to be uploaded to the appropriate sub-folder in the folder I will set up for our class on Ilias.

ONLY assignments submitted in MS Word-Format will be accepted.
