Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
In this seminar, we will be focussing primarily on qualitative research methodologies commonly used in the social sciences, including translation studies. We will be looking beyond the basic qualitative / quantitative dichotomy in that we will attempt to look at these two ends of the research spectrum as nothing more than two of potentially many different ways of looking at and understanding the complex world of human interaction.

The primary objective of this course, however, will not be to consider research methodologies from a theoretical perspective (even though we will do that as well). Instead, our main objective will be to help the course participants prepare themselves to write a first-rate master's thesis or to tackle another piece of actual research related to their program of studies.

So, while we will start out by establishing a solid foundation in qualitative research methodologies, including underlying assumptions and premises, data collection techniques and analytical methods and procedures, each student (or small team of students) will have the task of creating a (potentially) authentic research proposal that might be (but does not actually have to be) used to propose their own final MA thesis project in any department of the FTSK. (Your proposal may be written in German, French, Spanish or English). Please note: you will NOT be expected to actually carry out a complete research project for this course! You WILL, however, be expected to write a proposal for such a project, and you will need to carry out a pilot study for the project and report on it in your research proposal.

Please note: the research project proposal needs to be of high quality but does not have to be terribly long! You should be able to complete it comfortably by the due date (6 July), Your proposals are NOt to be printed out, but should instead be submitted to the appropriate folder on Ilias by 6 p.m. on the due date.

It will be essential for the participants to understand from the outset that this will NOT be a lecture course. We will have one visiting lecture on QUANTITATIVE research methods, but for the other topics, students will be working either individually or in pairs or small teams (depending on the number of students in the course), to investigate and report to the rest of the group on topics that are essential to getting a grasp of the qualitative research paradigm. The professor will provide you with the necessary readings to help you prepare your presentations.
