Inhalt: The use of the counterfactual has been well researched with regard to prose narratives: when Robinson says “If I had …”, we know that the alternate reality he is contemplating is a didactic tool reminding the reader of the soundness of his own decision-making and/or of God’s providence. After all, every time Robinson contemplates what did not happen, it is actually a worse version of reality than that which really did happen. With this as our starting point, we will discover how the counterfactual, i.e. a version of reality that never was, is used in lyric poetry. How does this differ from the function of the counterfactual in prose? What is specifically lyrical about alternate realities in poetry? While the methodological focus of this class is thus very specific, the selection of texts will be as broad as is imaginable, including a number of classics of English poetry that any student of EngLit ought to have acquainted themselves with.
Empfohlene Literatur: Poems are to be read from week to week and will be provided in the form of an electronic reader.
Zusätzliche Informationen: Presentations will need to be given by ALL MA students as well as those MEds taking the class for a graded presentation credit. Presentations will be on a selection of theoretical texts to be discussed at the beginning of our class. Early volunteers for an exercise in defining the lyric can get in touch by e-mail once successfully signed up for the class.
