Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
This survey course will discuss early American literature in its various social, cultural, and political contexts. We will read canonic and non-canonic texts and ask about the validity of their later reception as prefiguration of an American exceptionalism.

Our course text will probably be Giles Gunn, ed. Early American Writing. New York: Penguin, 1994.
