Inhalt: The years between the Civil War and World War II witnessed profound structural transformations in American politics, society, and culture linked to the rise of industrial society, international warfare, modern consumerism, devastating economic disasters, new forms of governance, and the country’s emergence as global superpower. In this lecture course we will take a closer look at the period from post-Civil War Reconstruction to the New Deal, and the way it continues to shape the United States today. Among the key themes to be discussed are: the emergence of “modernity” (including urbanization, secularization, technology, and new media), the repercussions of global warfare, the rise of both cultural pluralism and reactionary modernism, the transition from producer to consumer capitalism, corporate power and state-building, and changes in gender and race relations.
