Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: The colloquium is designed for students of Englisch Lehramt, Magister Englische Sprachwissenschaft, M.Ed and MA English Linguistics who are in the final phase of their studies. It helps to update and promote participants’ knowledge of basic concepts, theoretical approaches and research methodologies in the study of language. This course will offer the opportunity to revise, discuss and elaborate on linguistic issues that serve as a basus for students’ oral Master exams. We will also be dealing with the situational framework of oral exams. Those students who are writing their exam thesis in English Linguistics are given the opportunity to present on-going research and to receive feedback. And finally, the colloquium provides a forum for dealing with organizational matters and formal requirements concerning the linguistics part of the oral exam. Das Kolloquium schließt mit einer mündlichen Prüfung zu Semesterende ab. Alle TeilnehmerInnen wählen für die mündliche Prüfung 3 Themen. 2 dieser 3 Themen werden Gegenstand der mdl. Prüfung sein. Schreiben Sie mir bitte bis spätestens zur 3. Sitzung eine Email, in der Sie Ihre Prüfungsthemen angeben. 1. Prüfungsthema: stammt aus der Themenliste auf www.english-linguistics.uni-mainz.de. Dieses Thema wird Gegenstand Ihrer Präsentation während des Kursverlaufs sein. 2. Prüfungsthema: stammt ebenfalls aus der Themenliste auf www.english-linguistics.uni-mainz.de. 3. Prüfungsthema: Thema einer Linguistik-Vorlesung, die Sie im Verlauf Ihres Studiums oder im laufenden Semester belegt haben (bitte Vorlesungstitel und DozentInnenname angeben).
Inhalt: This class has been installed to provide a systematic survey of relevant areas of English linguistics. It is designed both as a remedial course, serving as starting point for the preparation of potential topics in the linguistics section of the fina M.Ed.l oral exam, and as a means of motivating further (more advanced) linguistic studies (Master theses). Topics will include: Phonetics/Phonology, Morphology and Word-Formation, English Grammar, Semantics, Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, World Englishes, American English, First and Second Language Acquisition, English Language History.
