Inhalt: This class will theorise and exemplify the twofold function of book illustration: as testimony to the artist’s interpretation, on the one hand, and a framing device which impinges on the reader’s understanding of a literary text, on the other one. Of particular interest here will be examples of illustrations which: - engage ideologically with the text; - suggest an artistic tension between what the text appears to be and the way it is illustrated; - reveal surprising choices of illustrated material; - codify an iconography of the target text; - re-contextualise the target text. A reader comprising excerpts from selected literary texts to be discussed will be made available at the beginning of the course.
Empfohlene Literatur: In addition, students are asked to read the following literary texts (which will be discussed extensively in class): 1. Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe, 1719 (any critical edition available at the University Library) 2. Laurence Sterne, A Sentimental Journey, 1768 (any critical edition available at the University Library) 3. Bram Stoker, Dracula, 1897 (any critical edition available at the University Library)
