Inhalt:
This seminar will (re)activate your knowledge of and about English poetry and equip you with the necessary tools and strategies to analyze poetic texts. You will enhance and challenge your ideas about the nature of poetry over time as well as acquaint yourself with a variety of texts by English poets from Shakespeare to Duffy.

The level of this seminar is aimed at students in their second semester of their BA/BEd. A considerable amount of time will be spent on acquiring academic competences (research, dealing with secondary texts, presenting research results, structuring written texts, etc.) which will lead up to writing your final paper.

Students are expected to prepare primary texts for each session carefully. Two tasks must be fulfilled by each student during the semester: a small individual research project as well as the close reading of a poetic text as a group entailing a video presentation. The seminar is concluded by a written paper (BEd: 1250 words, BA: 2500 words).

A reader will be provided by the start of the semester. Students who want to make use of their semester break are invited to consult John Lennard for a recap of important terminology and Terry Eagleton for his approach on how to read a poem.
