NEW, revised description (03.04.2020)!
Due to the current exceptional circumstances – no access to physical books in physical libraries, no in-classroom sessions, contact only online etc. – I have radically restructured our course, while retaining not only the original focus but also the methodology as much as possible.

We will examine the central themes and concerns of the Elizabethan world and worldview, teasing out how they are reflected in a key play of the time, William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. What clues does their treatment in the play give us about attitudes in Elizabethan England towards life and society at home, on the one hand, and other countries, cultures, ethnicities and beliefs, on the other?

We will be using online discussion forums, online e-book and video material, podcasts, mini-briefing papers by participants, and other material gradually being added to our Jogustine Reader to help us – along with the ‘backbone’ to our studies, the script of The Merchant of Venice. Each week, we will proceed further into the script, putting one or more scenes under the ‘microscope’ individually at home and using the input from your mini-briefing papers and other suggested source material before exchanging our ideas regarding the relevant Elizabethan-world(-view)-related topic(s) in a discussion forum. The edition of The Merchant of Venice that we will be working with is the Arden THIRD-series edition, edited by John Drakakis, published by Bloomsbury in 2010, ISBN-10 number 1903436818, or ISBN-13 number 9781903436813. Check the ISBN number and make sure you are buying the correct edition! You can get it from www.buecher.de for €10.49. Another online supplier whose name begins with ‘Am’ currently charges €3 more. However, both have warned that delivery is much slower than usual… So I suggest you order sooner, rather than later! Note: you WILL need your own copy of THIS edition, given that we are all working from home. I have selected it because it has the best notes and commentaries – essential when you can’t access the various reference works in the JGU libraries – and has a brilliant, 150-page introduction that will already introduce you to a number of the most significant themes for our course. It is, quite simply, the very best ‘value-for-money’ edition on the market.

We will also be working in mini-groups… but I will explain more about this at the start of the semester. Please note that you will need to keep our scheduled timeslot (Fridays, 2-4 p.m.) free for any synchronous discussions forums etc. that we will have.

If you have any questions that I can answer at this point, please drop me an email at claridg@uni-mainz.de (note the missing ‘e’ at the end of my email name…).
