Inhalt: Jane Austen has become a writer who invites ardent identification and devotion. Her work has become almost inseparable from the cult surrounding her and turns her novels into social events and practices. Her fans have found multiple ways to express their admiration – be it in the form of book clubs, fan fiction, conventions or a flocking crowd in front of her former home in Bath. Apart from Austenmania, there are more British cultural products that draw millions of fans around the globe. What is it about the writers of Pride and Prejudice, Sherlock Holmes or Harry Potter and the storyworlds they created that fascinates and motivates people to turn into (full-time) fans? In this class, we are going to explore this social phenomenon with the help of basic theories and methods of cultural studies as well as insights from psychology and media studies.
