Inhalt:
The seminar will expose students to a range of works written by modernist authors: Virginia Woolf, James Joyce and others. On the one hand, the seminar will focus on reading experiences, giving students the opportunity to develop complex reading skills necessary to engage with these often challenging but also immensely enjoyable narratives. On the other hand, students will engage with the ways in which these writers and their contemporaries reflected on their own work and the significance of their period (ca. 1910-1945), notably in Woolf’s essay “Modern Fiction”.
Overall, the seminar will develop students' skills in reading modernist texts and offer them detailed knowledge of the literary, cultural, biographical, national, political, philosophical and other contexts vital for an understanding of these works.

Empfohlene Literatur:
You will read Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse alongside shorter texts written by other authors – Please purchase a paperback edition of Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (ideally the edition of 2008 or later in the Oxford World’s Classics series). It is a good idea to order via phone or internet from a local bookshop to support them during the pandemic.

Digitale Lehre:
The seminar 410 Modern Fiction will commence in online teaching format via the Learning Management System - LMS - called Moodle in asynchronic weekly seminars. Please follow the general instructions for Moodle and check your emails for instructions starting by 21 April 2020.
