Inhalt: Memoirs are usually understood as the recollections of one or several bracketed periods of the writer’s entire life; they can consist of biographical as well as autobiographical writing; some critics consider memoirs “scandalous” and “titillating” publications that give away too much sordid information about people’s private lives. And yet memoirs are well and alive in high and popular culture alike. The aim of the course is for students to develop an understanding of the theory of auto/biographical writing from the nineteenth-century to the present, trace continuities and discontinuities of key themes and narrative techniques, and analyse contemporary examples such as the bibliomemoir Girl with Dove written by Sally Bailey and the celebrity memoir Me written by Elton John.
