Inhalt:
This seminar focuses on the formal aspects of Renaissance drama, by which I do not (or do not only) mean the generic identity of plays, but also the many diverse structural micro-patterns into which playwrights arrange their texts (plot, causality, conflict and contrast) and the way they distribute information overall. We will be reading these plays “like actors” – i.e. with their performance in mind – to gain a more precise understanding of the way they work and are likely to affect audiences.

Empfohlene Literatur:
Required reading: W. Shakespeare/J. Fletcher, The Two Noble Kinsmen
                              Th. Middleton, The Revenger's Tragedy
                              W. Shakespeare, Othello

Please avail yourselves of good, critical editions of  these plays (Mermaid, Oxford World's Classics, Arden Edition).

Additional materials to be distributed electronically and in class.  ALL STUDENTS are expected to have read and prepared ALL SET TEXTS.

Zusätzliche Informationen:
- Course requirements depending on module in whose context you are taking this class.

- “Aktive Teilnahme” (all students): THREE short postings on JGU Reader in which you apply the concepts and principles discussed in the course INDEPENDENTLY to other relevant textual examples (these can be taken from the corpus selected for this course, or from other Renaissance plays that you have studied in other seminars). Deadline for last posting: 6 July 2020. Failure to complete this task means that you have failed the course. Note that these postings are serious, original pieces of writing and need to be spell-checked and proofread before being uploaded! Plagiarism will lead to immediate expulsion from the course.

- Presentation (depending on module): 20 minutes + handout

- Term Paper (length depending on your degree course); topic MUST be discussed with me IN ONE OF MY OFFICE HOURS beforehand. Deadline: 14 August 2020 (earlier submission possible). Term paper to be handed in as a hardcopy in Frau Wächter’s office as well as electronically as an e-mail attachment (send to wood@uni-mainz.de).
