Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: You need to have a sound knowledge of the contents of the lecture ***Introduction to English Linguistics***, as all core fields are relevant in the discussion of audiovisual translation. I will not spend time explaining basic linguistic terminology. Required: active participation in class/on-line, presentation, term paper (see the Guidelines for Writing Seminar Papers for details, downloadable here: https://www.english-linguistics.uni-mainz.de/materialien-downloads/)
Inhalt: In this seminar we will do group projects to investigate a variety of issues in audiovisual translation. We will focus on dubbing and subtitling, but projects on voice-over, audio description or subtitling for the hard of hearing are also welcome. Issues that can be addressed include: the translation of humour (e.g., wordplay), translating culture-specific references (e.g., Manhattan Project), translating songs (e.g., in Disney movies), translating accents and dialects, etc. More general aspects like kinesic synchrony or visual anchors also offer ample opportunities for research. Each project will be presented in class/on-line (mandatory). We will determine the format as is suitable for the respective project.
