Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: This is an advanced seminar in American literary studies focusing on changing conceptualizations of nature and the environment in nineteenth-century American literature and culture. It is expected that students have attended at least one (pro)seminar in (American) literary studies.
Inhalt: At the beginning of the semester, students will be introduced to the field of ecocriticism as a relatively recent theoretical and methodological outlook in literary studies. In our discussion of literary texts, we will primarily focus on conceptualizations of nature and the environment in the age of Romanticism, such as the American Pastoral, the discourse of the sublime, notions of “wilderness.” In addition, we will also pay attention to the political, social, and ethical questions that have been addressed in American nature writing in the course of the 19th century.
Empfohlene Literatur: Most of our class readings are available through ILIAS. In addition, it is recommended that you purchase a copy of Thoreau’s Walden: Henry David Thoreau, Walden. Penguin Classics, 2016. (ISBN: 9780241261859)
