Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
“The merest schoolgirl, when she falls in love, has Shakespeare, Donne, Keats to speak her mind for her; but let a sufferer try to describe a pain in his head to a doctor and language at once runs dry.” In On Being Ill, Virginia Woolf emphasizes a gap between the individual experience of suffering and a lack of literary representations of illness. Yet illness presents a particularly interesting topic for literature as it situates the individual body in its medical and cultural contexts. This seminar brings diverse literary works into conversation and traces their depiction of illness and its medical treatment. The discussion focuses on works pertaining to different historical contexts and genres and thereby navigates shifting presentations and concepts of illness.

Dear participants,

Please note that this course will be taught exclusively through the online platform Moodle. Due to the current situation, we have to move away from the planned structure and instead interact via the online platform by formulating study questions, thesis statements and others in response to reading material. In addition, office hours will be held online to consider any questions or feedback. This asynchronous course style gives you more freedom in deciding when to do most of the course work. Many instructors university-wide decided to go with this model to ensure that students receive the best possible chance in actively participating in as much classes as possible.

We understand how particularly stressful this situation is for many of you and hence wanted to give you the chance to participate at a slower pace. We will use Moodle for the course work, such as reading assignments, study activities, and background information in the form of texts, slides, videos, and short lectures. Please check your JGU email account regularly for notifications concerning the course as well as information that the Studienbüro and the President's office may forward. For further information on attendance, rules for active participation and term papers, please consult the syllabus that will be uploaded to the course on Moodle on April 20th, 2020.

Also, please already note JGU’s President Prof Dr. Krausch’s email to all of us in which he states:

(please excuse the availability in German only, for an explanation in English consult the email you received April 6th, 2020)

This information of course suggests that all scheduled /announced exams for the Summer Term 2020 are preliminary and certainly subject to change. The window for exam registration, however, is already planned as many of you read in the email excerpt above.
We are very much looking forward to interacting with you online – certainly this is a new and challenging experience for all of us.
