Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: With the focus on indigenous studies and marginalized ethnic literary products, Native North American Native archives have experienced a great amount of attention in recent years. As such, nineteenth and twentieth century works of Native American literature are receiving more attention in scholarly work. Especially the literary form of the periodical is being considered as its own genre, requiring a close look not only at individual publications but also at a broader range of publications. From the nineteenth century onwards, these publications are being surveyed and analyzed to determine not only literary, but also cultural and social trends that manifest in the publication of serialized prints. The examples of publications we are going to read range from missionary papers to tribal papers, bilingual publications, as well as miscellaneous and rare prints; all attesting to the richness of the genre and the diversity of opinions voiced in weekly, monthly, even yearly publications. This seminar will explore not only the circulation of these periodicals within the context of the periodical studies, but aims to put the periodical itself at the forefront of scholarly research. The hitherto mostly unexplored territories of late nineteenth and early twentieth century publications are the subject of this seminar, and the primary source material will be underscored with recent theoretical and methodological approaches in periodical studies
