Procedure and Requirements: Students who take this course as an Übung give a presentation (including handout); those who take it as a seminar also submit a written paper (in addition to giving a presentation and preparing a handout). Your papers should average 12-15 pages of text plus outline and bibliography, and should be written in English. The papers must be submitted, at the latest, on August 15, 2020. For the form of your paper, please check “A Guide to Writing Term Papers” on our home page (Fächer/Englisch/Amerikanistik/Materialien) and the 7th edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (see Lehrbuchsammlung). Your handout should be 1-2 pages summarizing the most important points of your oral report. Your oral report should average 20 minutes and should be given in English.

Inhalt:

Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw (1898), which is both a ghost story and a masterpiece of psychological realism, has engendered numerous, often contradictory, interpretations. In this seminar, after familiarizing ourselves with the fundamentals of adaptation studies and the scope of the author’s oeuvre, we will analyze James’s novella and compare it to a) several film adaptations—from Jack Clayton’s The Innocents (1961) to Tim Fywell’s The Turn of the Screw (2009)—; b) Benjamin Britten’s opera (1954); and c) selected German translations. In independent projects, we will also look at literary adaptations such as Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “Accursed Inhabitants of the House of Bly” (from the 1994 collection Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque). Special emphasis will be placed on how these multimodal adaptations deal with the novella’s inherent ambiguity, unreliable narrator, and complex representation of the human mind.
