Inhalt: This course aims to analyse how period dramas reconstruct women’s history and influence the shaping of historical awareness of the British nation. For decades the popularity of this form of reception has been on the increase and so has its impact on the audiences. Period dramas constitute a great device to investigate the popular understanding of history and the importance of the interdependency between the past and the present in general. During the semester we will explore that relationship with regard to women’s history in greater detail. This will include not only the consumption and analysis of various period dramas but also the study of the periods represented within their contexts. Furthermore, we shall get acquainted with the concepts of historical consciousness, historical culture and historical thinking, all of which play major roles in the reception of history. Current research will naturally also be part of the syllabus. The period dramas in question are Elizabeth (1998), The Favourite (2018) and Suffragette (2015). No pre-readings are required!
