Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: In order to pass this class, you will be required to read and prepare selected texts either in class or at home. In order to open each class, a student or a group of students will give a short presentation introducing the genre of the day as well as important authors who contributed to it. Further requirements are your regular attendance as well as active participation in class. There will be a short test at the end of the semester.
Inhalt: During the semester, we will have a closer look at several sub-genres of American Crime Fiction such as the “hard-boiled novel” and the "American Roman Noir.” Particular interest will be given to Edgar Allen Poe’s “tales of ratiocination” and female detective writing. We will read selected texts and stories that explain the beginnings and structures of American crime writing and its popularity with the readers.
