Inhalt: Today, literary scholars often speak about the "transnational turn" in American studies and have started to read and analyze American literature within the context of cultural encounters and exchanges with the rest of the world. In this course, we will read and discuss contemporary literature that addresses topics ranging from the immigration experience to the American Dream and recent policies of granting and denying access to the US post 9/11. We will also familiarize ourselves with theoretical approaches to transnational literature via postcolonial studies, hemispheric studies, and concepts like the Black Atlantic. This course also attempts to familiarize students with terminology and methodology of transnational American literature. Authors to be discussed include Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, Teju Cole, Junot Díaz, Imbolo Mbue, and Sandra Cisneros.
