Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
This proseminar will offer a guided step-by-step introduction to research into conversation analysis.

The course will familiarize students with elementary tools and essential skills to promote their self-determined studies in upcoming linguistics courses, with maximum opportunity for individual support and topics tailored to each individual participant.

To obtain credit, participants are first expected to present their reading report of a textbook chapter in class; second, an abstract of a research article expanding on an aspect that is related to the textbook chapter topic will have to be handed in.

Inhalt:
A brief glance at an arbitrary transcript of a narrative (see the excerpt below) from an authentic spoken interaction will not only manifest diverse phenomena that ‘flood’ any normal conversation, prominently among them discourse markers (well), hesitations and pauses (uh, uh, oh), restarts (oh, anyway), repeats (we went to, we went to). It will also feature verbal phenomena ‘below’ the sentence – so-called non-clausal units, phrases, or single words (big hotel).

Well, we went to, we went to San Francisco because I remember, uh, uh, oh, what the heck’s the name of that hotel we stayed? Big hotel. Mm. Oh, anyway, uh, but we just stayed there a couple of nights and that’s all, and then we took the bus back, of course.

Direct face-to-face interactions also include regular responses from the conversation partner(s), such as back-channeling (mm), abandoned utterances (because I remember), reformulations, interruptions, or speakers co-constructing an utterance (the latter cases not found in this particular excerpt).

In addition, speakers regularly engage in diverse non-verbal activities, e.g., eye-contact, manual gestures, facial expressions, or body posture, as vital component sources of information in discourse.

In light of these observations, this proseminar will introduce students to major approaches and techniques that help explore naturally occurring language use: Conversation Analysis addresses interlocutors’ communicative strategies in face-to-face settings, such as co-constructing their discourse or organizing turn-taking in conversation, and it accounts for the fact that communication will regularly reach ‘beyond’ the sentence and the verbal, revealing the socio-cultural background and socio-psychological characteristics of the interlocutors.
