Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: This is a course for newcomers to subtitling! It is NOT open to students who have already completed one or more courses in subtitling. Course participants will be introduced to subtitling software, the norms and standards of subtitling, and the role of syntax and punctuation in the subtitling process. We will be working with a number of film passages into and out of German and English. Toward the end of the semester, students will have the opportunity to tackle and present their own subtitling project (which they may work on with a partner or alone). For these final projects, students may choose to subtitle a German or English video (about 20 minutes) into French or Spanish if they wish. Participants in this course can expect to obtain a thorough theoretical and practical introduction to the subtitling of different types of film material.
