Inhalt: Once considered an ephemeral trend, reality television became a definitive staple of television culture around the turn of the millennium and ensured network executives unprecedented audience ratings. Over the past two decades, the term has evolved into a “catch-all category.” Over the course of the semester, we are going to discuss the issue of defining reality television, address selected sub-genres and reality formats, analyze possible reasons for the genre’s success, its advantages and disadvantages, and its noticeable influence on American society. Due to limited time, this course can only offer a first understanding of reality television and serves as a basis for future, personal, and more in-depth research on the topic.
