Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
MPORTANT NOTICE:  This will be a blended learning class, meaning that we will meet as a group at our regular class time only a few times during the semester (if at all, depending on the impact of the virus on the University this fall). If we cannot meet in person, you will be attending online workshops (at a time of your own choosing) to acquire the skills you will need to complete your work this semester. As there will be few (if any) in-class sessions, they will all be mandatory. This means that you should NOT schedule another class at the same time as this one in the event that we are allowed (or required) to have classes on campus.

In this course, Übung students will tackle an authentic translation project from German into English (a project which a group of Seminar students will manage.) The work of the Übung students will include: 1) assuming responsibility for translating a small number of pages of the overall project, and 2) acquiring and applying basic knowledge about terminology management, computer-based translation tool use, revision work and professionalism in the workplace. The required skills will be developed collaboratively during our mandatory workshops during the first four weeks of the semester.

For those weeks of the semester when no required in-class session is planned, you will be responsible for handling your assigned translation and translation-related work independently and/or with partners. The course instructor will make himself available to provide individual tutoring for all students who need assistance with their translation.

The translation project itself will involve a 50-page issue of a German journal on a particular aspect of economic sustainability. We will create our own glossary in accordance with professional terminology management practice and you will develop skill in revising other translator's work. The translation is to be completed by early February 2020 and will be published online (with the translators names included) shortly thereafter.

Please note that this will NOT be a conventional "Wer nimmt mal den nächsten Satz" type of class. Instead of sitting passively ingesting knowledge passed on by a teacher, you will be working autonomously and collaboratively to apply your already solid knowledge of English and translation in an authentic project situation. If you are NOT prepared to work autonomously, paying due attention to the teamwork aspect of the project, please do NOT sign up for this course. (Several students manage to fail every semester because they prove incapable of meeting the team deadlines or do high-quality work).

As we are doing an authentic project for a real client, no auditors or Erasmus students will be permitted to take this particular class. In addition, this course is NOT appropriate for students whose English is not at the C1 level. You will be expected to translate a difficult text into a foreign language under time pressure and your level must be at a very high level if you hope to succeed.
