Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Germersheim graduates will have acquired a high level of competence in one or more foreign languages and many of them will be in a good position to secure part- or full-time work as language teachers. As you all know, the current public health disaster has made on-site educational encounters in many cases difficult or even impossible. Against this backdrop, this seminar is being offered to MA students to both language learning and teaching opportunities in online formats. The course itself may be run either in a regular classroom as indicated below, or online, in the event that the viral situation makes in-person classes impossible in the WS.

The structure and contents of the course will be highly dependent on the course format. In any event, there will be a variety of reading materials to be read, discussions to be held on the readings and on your personal experiences with online learning, and presentations to be prepared and offered to the other class participants.

We will be looking at the history of distance learning for language acquisition, the panoply of systems and software tools that have been used in recent decades, and also tools and techniques that have been adopted in the current public health emergency.

To apply the knowledge gleaned from the study of the various approaches to distance language learning, we will also do a case study of a "naturalistic" teaching approach developed by the course facilitator in Germersheim over the last 20 years. The approach assumes a primordial role for "embodiment" in language learning processes, so the imposition of a distance learning format poses especial problems for teachers who wish to use this approach. There will no conventional research paper required, but the seminar participants will work in small teams to create and/or assess teaching activities that can be integrated into this "naturalistic" teaching approach.
