Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: The class will be held weekly. The class language will be English.
Inhalt: The class is aimed at students who want to extend their knowledge of quantitative methods of data analysis, especially regarding the application of methods of network research onto datasets from the field of Digital Humanities. A focus will lie on historical and archaeological research; however, inputs from other fields are highly encouraged. In the first half of the semester, students will acquire a fundamental knowledge of network theory, network analysis methods, and the design and implementation of research projects focusing on a network approach. In the second half, the class will delve deeper into actual applications of network research in the Humanities through the discussion and analysis of selected case studies from different fields. Alongside the theoretical part, students will be given an introduction into the practical work of network analysis with Python, including the manipulation and preparation of datasets for network analysis as well as the application of common measures onto this data. To pass the class, students will be expected to a) read and discuss papers that will be assigned from week to week; b) work on and present individual or group projects.

Digitale Lehre: As the semester is to be expected to take place largely online, we are working on a concept to move the class into the digital space. As the implementation of these ideas will depend on the number of students, we will give an update on planned formats approximately one week before the semester begins.
