Inhalt:

In this Practice Course (Übung), we will read and analyze three books by one of the most original scholars in Anglophone Translation Studies, Douglas Robinson: 1) Becoming a Translator (1997), a brilliant introduction to our field and the education of translators (an electronic version of the fourth, 2020 edition will be ordered by our library); 2) Translation and Empire (1997), a great survey of postcolonial interventions in Anglo-American translation studies (an electronic 2014 version will be available by October); and 3) The Translator's Turn (1991), a "somatic," dialogic, and pragmatic approach to the history of translation and one of the most intelligent books ever published on the subject (relevant excerpts will be uploaded on ILIAS). Course requirements include reading assignments and a video presentation (15-20 minutes).

Digitale Lehre:

To enable time flexibility, this course has been organized in asynchronous form, with the exception of two Skype for Business "live" sessions in the first (Nov. 3, 2020, 9:40) and eighth (Jan. 5, 2021, 9:40) weeks of the winter semester. The course program will be handled via reading assignments (independent studies), student presentations (PowerPoint, OBS, or Panopto videos), and instructor videos (Panopto). All reading assignments and videos will be embedded in ILIAS so that ILIAS is the only platform you will need for this course (the electronic versions of Becoming a Translator and Translation and Empire you will find in the OPAC of our library by November). Further details (introduction to our program, organization, time schedule, etc.) will be discussed in a "predeparture orientation" Skype session on Nov. 3 and the first instructor video.
