Inhalt:
In this seminar, we will explore possible approaches to Renaissance theatre between page and stage. We will think about theories of (early modern) drama, questions of genre, theatre history and practice as well as dramatic communication. Throughout the semester, you will work in small groups and explore different ways of thinking about and developing your very own approach to one of the plays we will be reading together. Please get an idea of which of the plays you want to work on before the semester starts and read The Knight of the Burning Pestle (ca. 1607).

Empfohlene Literatur:
Please buy and read the following editions:

Beaumont, Francis. The Knight of the Burning Pestle. Edited by Michael Hattaway, Bloomsbury, 2002. ISBN 9781408144107

Lyly, John. Galatea. Edited by Leah Scragg, Manchester UP, 2012. ISBN 9780719088056

Kyd, Thomas. The Spanish Tragedy. Edited by J. R. Mulryne and Andrew Gurr, Bloomsbury, 2009. ISBN 9781408114216

Shakespeare, William. Antony and Cleopatra. Edited by Ania Loomba, Norton, 2011. ISBN 9780393930771 (the Arden 3 or New Cambridge editions will also do - but the Norton edition has a lot of extra material relevant to our class)

Zusätzliche Informationen:
Please be aware that this is a reading-intensive course; there will be weekly assignments and all students will hand in a short essay at one point during the seminar. Some of the texts may be available via https://www.dramaonlinelibrary.com and additional texts will be provided on https://lms.uni-mainz.de/moodle/login/index.php.

Digitale Lehre:
Presumably, the course will take place online (depending on the Corona situation come April) and we will most likely use MS Teams for our generally synchronous sessions.
