Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Today, literary scholars often speak about the "transnational turn" in American studies and discuss American literature within the context of cultural encounters and exchanges with the rest of the world. In this course, we will read and discuss contemporary novels, short stories, and other literary texts that addresses immigration experiences, the myth of the American Dream, and recent policies of granting and denying access to the US post 9/11. Students will familiarize themselves with theoretical and methodological approaches to transnational literature via postcolonial studies, hemispheric studies, and concepts like Afropolitanism. We will read Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche Americanah (2013) and Teju Cole’s novel Open City (2011) in their entirety. Other reading assignments will be made available electronically. This course will be taught exclusively on Moodle (lms.uni-mainz.de). In this asynchronous format, we will work with brief presentations as introductions to the topics, study guides and assignments on primary texts, occasional online discussion forums, and links to videos and other online material. At the end of each topic section, we will synchronously meet on Big Blue Button to share ideas and discuss the texts and worksheets live.
