Inhalt:
Content:
“All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players” (William Shakespeare). Building on this, the basic idea of the master’s seminar “Tack a Map” is to convince listeners by an idea using thematic maps. This seminar will teach you to be creative, develop a convincing play and to perform in front of a fictive audience in a certain role. Through the preparation and the performance, you will acquire skills and practical knowledge for your university and professional career. The seminar “Tack a Map” is supervised by Prof. Dr. Anton Escher and organizationally accompanied by Marie Karner.

In collaboration with other students, you will work out a performance in which each team member plays a certain role. As soon as groups of approximately five students are set, you will start with the following considerations:

  • When, where and how should our performance take place? (Lifeworld, future, past, fictitious etc.)
  • What roles do we want to play?
  • Which idea do we want to realize?
  • Who do we want to convince of the idea? Who is the auditorium or audience? What roles do the listeners play?
  • Where should the play take place?
  • Which four maps do we want to use?

IMPORTANT!!! Your idea, definitions and planning remain secret! Only your team and the supervisors will know the procedure and idea of your play!

Instructions for playing “Tack a Map”

Part 1  Your team enters the stage (the audience is already present) (approx. 5 minutes)

  • Define yourself or introduce yourself to the audience as a team and afterwards individually to clarify the function of each team member.
  • Define the setting or the location where the event takes place.
  • Define the audience (by name if necessary).
  • Explain the (realistic, fictional or futuristic) goal of the event or your presentation: What is the issue/theme/target you want to convince the audience of?

Part 2 Lecture of your team or presentation of your concern (using four thematic maps) with introduction (approx. 20 minutes)

  •  You start your lecture or presentation with the demonstration of one map in order to locate the problem or the problematized facts in the lifeworld.
  • You will stage the problem/issue using a wide variety of tools. All possible visualization strategies are welcome (oral remarks, images, sounds, films, animations, etc.). A creative presentation is desired!
  • Present your idea to solve the problem. Do not forget to include four convincing maps in your presentation.

Part 3 Questions from the audience or discussion with the audience (approx. 15 minutes)

  • Challenge the audience to ask critical questions.
  • Try to convince the audience of your ideas with suitable strategies.
  • Do not only use rational arguments. Discuss with the audience. Answer the questions of the audience.

Part 4  Evaluation of your idea, goal or concern by the audience (approx. 2 minutes)

  • Let the audience vote about implementing your idea/goal and announce the result of the vote. (The result of the vote has no influence on the evaluation of your presentation, performance and designed thematic maps).
  • Thank the auditorium and close the event.
