Inhalt:
Queen Victoria ruled Britain for over sixty years. During her long reign (1837-1901), the country came to consider itself a world superpower, with an empire that extended across one-fifth of the earth’s surface. Almost a quarter of the world's population, on paper at least, owed allegiance to the 'queen empress'. The Victorian period has become synonymous with the many positive and progressive political changes that took place during the nineteenth century. The arts flourished to such an extent that many of the intellectual and cultural achievements of the period still shape our world today. Discoveries and inventions in the sciences and technology -- notably the steam-powered engine and telephone – also changed the lives of Victoria’s subjects irrevocably. This series of lectures examines from cultural, political and religious angles the momentous changes that the Victorian age brought to Britain, and the legacy that has shaped the nation as we know it today.
