Inhalt: This course aims to provide an overview of the history of women’s fight for suffrage in Great Britain. The time span covered will start in the early 19th century, when the question of a vote for women was first raised in the UK and end in modern times. However, the main focus will be the years between 1900 and 1928. Throughout the semester we will explore and investigate different aspects of the suffrage movement. In doing so, a wide variety of sources will need to be analysed – ranging from postcards to original film material and from newspapers to music. Biographies as well as historical events will of course also play a major role. At the end of the semester we shall take a close look at the modern reception of the movement, which will also include the analysis of a variety of sources, including extracts from films, music, novels and dramas. You are also welcome to share material you discover yourselves! A Reader will be provided at the start of the semester. No pre-readings are required!
