Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

This will of course be a distance learning course. We will have at most a few joint meetings online, but much of your work will be done autonomously. You will be working under the guidance and with the support of a group of seminar students who will be learning how to manage a translation project by managing yours. The PMs will be creating a set of online workshops to help you acquire or strengthen the skills you will need to complete your work this semester – and that you will surely need if you work as translators after graduation. Although there is a specified time when this class is supposed to meet, it is highly unlikely that we will actually meet as a whole group at any time. This means that you should feel free to attend another class that meets at our scheduled time, if you wish.

In this course, you, as Übung students, will tackle an authentic translation project from German into English. Your work as Übung students will include: 1) assuming responsibility for translating a small number of pages of the overall project, and 2) acquiring and applying basic knowledge about terminology management, computer-based translation tool use, revision work and professionalism in the workplace. The required skills will be developed collaboratively during our workshops that will be made available for you to work through own time during the first four weeks of the semester.

As you can surely imagine, you will all be responsible for handling your assigned translation and translation-related work independently and/or with partners as the case may be. The course instructor will make himself available to provide individual tutoring for all students who need assistance with their translation.

The translation project itself will involve a 50-page issue of a German journal on a particular aspect of economic sustainability. We will create our own glossary in accordance with professional terminology management principles and practice, and you will develop your skill at revising other translator's work. The translation is to be completed by early July 2020 and is expected to be published online shortly thereafter.

Please note that this will NOT be a conventional "Wer nimmt mal den nächsten Satz" type of class!! Instead of sitting passively ingesting knowledge passed on by a teacher, you will be working autonomously and collaboratively to apply your already solid knowledge of English and translation in an authentic project situation. If you are NOT prepared to work autonomously, paying due attention to the teamwork aspect of the project, please do NOT sign up for this course. (Several students manage to fail every semester because they prove incapable of meeting the team deadlines or do high-quality work).

As we are doing an authentic project for a real client, meaning that we MUST be able to depend completely on each and every participant to do his or her work in a timely and very competent manner,  no auditors or Erasmus students will be permitted to take this particular class. In addition, this course is NOT appropriate for students whose English is not at the C1 level (at least!)  You will be expected to translate a difficult text into a foreign language under time pressure and your work must be at a very high level if you hope to succeed.

Please keep this in mind before you sign up for this course! Your success in this class will depend on your having EXCELLENT translation skills from German into English to begin with. For this reason, it is NOT appropriate for participants to sign up who do not have English as their FIRST foreign language.
