Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
According to statistic, those US citizens who consider themselves “multiracial”, “mixed”, “hapa”, “brown” is on the rise. The multitude of terms for this “half and half” status already shows that the group is divergent, that the definitions are shifting, that the racial and ethnic identity of these individuals is in constant flow, depending on how they are seen by others and how they see themselves. These internal and external perceptions often clash. In class we will first look at the discourse of multiracial and multicultural identity formation in academic, journalistic and political texts and contexts. Then we will move on to life writing and fictional texts (short stories and poems) by writers who belong to this group and address the topic in their writing.

This seminar will be an online seminar combing synchronous class sessions via MS Teams and asynchronous work assignments including:

1. reading the texts (critical articles, essays, short stories, poems) provided as pdf files on ILIAS; and watching a few short movie clips (usu. on YouTube) at your leisure
2. participating in MS Teams discussions during our synchronous class sessions (Tuesdays, 11:20-12:50)
3. preparing a Power Point presentation on “your” topic (usu. in a small group)
4. handing in a written paper (Hausarbeit) to be submitted by August 10, 2021.

The language of this seminar (oral and written) is English only. Exchange students are welcome if they are enrolled in a master’s program at their home university.
