Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: In 1803, Thomas Jefferson sent a delegation to France to negotiate the purchase of New Orleans, which he deemed to be an essential harbor city for the future trade of the young nation. Instead of acquiring the city of New Orleans, the U.S. was able to purchase the entire Louisiana Territory from France, thus doubling the size of the country at a stroke. Jefferson had already planned to send an officer and a dozen soldiers to explore the West before the Louisiana Purchase to establish contact with the Indians and to find the Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean. With the purchase of the Louisiana Territory, the planned exploration of the West gained greater importance, which is why Jefferson decided to send his personal secretary Meriwether Lewis on this expedition. Lewis selected William Clark as his co-commander. Jefferson sent off the expedition with the explicit objective to explore the geography, the flora and the fauna of the newly acquired territoy, which was still unchartered at the time. Additionally, Lewis and Clark were to establish contact with the Indians. In this course we will first look at the historical context of the expedition, including the history of the Louisiana Territory and the Louisiana Purchase. We will also study selected journal entries from the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
