Inhalt: In this class, we are going to explore the representation of social stratification in British fiction from the 19th to the 21st centuries. Social class is one of the perennial themes of the British novel - small wonder, since the birth of the novel itself coincided with the birth of the middle class(es). First, we are going to have a look at Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South (1854) for an in-depth discussion of the complex connections between the Industrial Revolution and ideas about social class. Then we will transition to the early 20th century with D.H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers (1913) for a more introspective point of view on class. Finally, we will turn to the 21st century with Sunjeev Sahota's The Year of the Runaways (2015).
Empfohlene Literatur: Please buy all three novels. Digital versions are fine. Here are the preferred editions: Gaskell, Elizabeth Cleghorn. North and South. (Oxford World's Classics, paperback) Sahota, Sunjeev. The Year of the Runaways. Picador, 2016.
