Inhalt: In stark contrast to the years from 1900 to 1945, the second half of the twentieth century was largely marked by peace and stability in Britain. For much of this period, ideological conflict gave way to consensus. Yet, by the end of the century, Britain seemed a markedly less optimistic society than it had been in 1945. Indeed, it has been argued that a central theme of the post-war period is the decline in national self-confidence – due in no small part to the dismantling of the Empire – and in confidence in British institutions. This series of lectures aims to make students familiar with the basic outlines of British culture and history in the period from around 1945 to 2000. It will also enable them to understand the place of literature in reflecting and commenting upon these changes, and to chart the main trends and authors in novels, drama and poetry in Britain in the period from the end of the Second World War to the start of the 21st century.
