Inhalt: The beginning of the 20th century was marked by the cultural movement of Modernism. Writers, artists and philosophers were exploring new forms and styles, shifting from old traditions towards expressions more aligned with the swift developments of industrialisation and urbanisation. In this course, we will focus on one of the central motives of Modernism: movement in the metropolis. You will meet the literary figure of the “flâneur”, a universal representative of modern city life concerned with freedom, the meaning of existence, self-invention and being-with-others in urban spaces. At the same time, we will consider how the rapid movement of life, especially in a metropolis, can be slowed down by walking and paying attention. ASSIGNMENTS This course will be designed to improve your academic writing. Assignments during the semester will include short presentations as well as obligatory writing exercises in preparation for your final term paper.
Empfohlene Literatur: Reading will include texts from writers of the Bloomsbury Group, such as Virginia and Leonard Woolf, as well as others. Texts will be made available at the beginning of the semester. You are however welcome to read and research any fitting texts in advance.
Digitale Lehre: You will find all reading and assignments in a complementary MS Teams course.
