Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Betrifft B.A.-Studierende: Es handelt sich hier um den Cultural Studies IV-Kurs und nicht die Vorlesung! SIE DÜRFEN DIE VORLESUNG UND DIESEN CULTURAL STUDIES IV-KURS AUF KEINEN FALL GLEICHZEITIG BESUCHEN! Documents relating to the course will be discussed in more detail. CS IV must not be taken in conjunction with the lecture course but students can only earn credit for either the lecture course or Culture Studies.
Inhalt: Documents relating to the lecture course will be discussed in more detail. CS IV can only be taken in conjunction with the lecture course but students can only earn credit for either the lecture course or Culture Studies. If possible, the Cultural Studies course will require classroom presence.
Empfohlene Literatur: American ideology may be framed in two ways (which complement each other), one that can be traced back to John Locke and the concept of self-interest (egotism), the other to the Scottish moral-sense school and its ideas of benevolence and human sympathy (altruism) generating personal and social happiness. Throughout American history, this sentimental disposition has been a motivating force in various political and social reforms, such as abolitionism, women´s emancipation, charity and social equity movements as well as civil rights advocacy.
