Inhalt:
The interdisciplinary study of magazines allows us to gain insight into a specific form of media which has helped to mirror and shape the world we live in. As a complex system of knowledge production and dissemination, magazines partake of both the aesthetic and the social realm. While they serve as platforms of communication and foster the exchange of ideas and opinions, magazines have often become the drivers of innovation. This seems to hold all the more true for the print and online magazines of transnational independent publications, which we will concentrate on in this class. Although a niche product with a limited number of readers, many ‘indie magazines’ have managed to trigger transformations, be it with regard to social or ecological awareness or with regard to innovative aesthetics. Given the magazines’ multimodal nature resulting from editorial, content, and design strategies, etc., this graduate seminar will raise questions about how to read magazines. Our discussion will involve a number of activities inside and outside the classroom in order to develop methods for the close reading of magazines.

This graduate seminar is open to students of Fachbereich 05 and Fachbereich 06; it takes place in cooperation with the Mainz research project: Transnational Periodical Cultures, see http://www.transnationalperiodicalcultures.net
