Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:

• This course is for BA and MA students who are not enrolled for English as a foreign language and who want to practise writing in English.
  
• Your English level should be between B1.2 and C1. Please do not register for this course if your proficiency level is C2 or if you are a native speaker.
  
• No English certificate is required. However, if you are not sure what your English level is, you can try a free online test such as Dialang.
  
• To earn credit points for the course, you need to participate actively. This involves submitting coursework (such as texts prepared at home) on time, presenting your work in class and/or online, taking part in classroom and/or online discussions, and communicating professionally about any problems arising. At the end of the semester, you will write a short self-assessment describing and evaluating what you have learned in the course.
  You will be expected to submit additional written work to make up for any classroom or Microsoft Teams sessions that you do not attend.
  
• The language of communication in this course will be English unless the majority of students prefer German. If individual students prefer German, they may use German in class discussions (but not, of course, for text production assignments).
  

Inhalt:
In this course, you will practise producing texts belonging to various genres, the selection of which will be based on their relevance for translation. Genres will include, for example, business letters, news reports, instructions for use, encyclopedia articles, tourist advertisements, and dictionary definitions.

We will look at a number of resources that can help you write professionally in a foreign language. For instance, parallel texts will enable you to familiarize yourselves with culture-specific genre conventions. Monolingual dictionaries will tell you what exactly words mean, and dictionaries as well as corpora will show you how words can be used in context. Grammar resources can contribute to ensuring morphological and syntactic correctness. If you wish, we can also discuss the extent to which machine translation can serve as a tool in text production.

The main objective of this course is for you to acquire the procedural knowledge necessary for independent work. In other words, you should become familiar with the various resources available and the best ways of using them. Declarative knowledge – that is, knowledge of individual new words, grammar rules, or genre conventions – is not unimportant but secondary.

• Exchange students are welcome provided that they meet the language requirements (see above).
  
• Course assessment is on a pass/fail basis. However, exchange students who require a numerical grade for their home university will be given one provided that the exchange coordinator at their home university confirms that a numerical grade is necessary.
  
• This course is for credit only (no "Hörer" registration).
  

Digitale Lehre:

• Course materials will be made available in Moodle. This is also where you will upload your assignments.
  
• Any video sessions will be held in Microsoft Teams.
  
• If necessary, you can attend the course on a digital, rather than in-class, basis.
