Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Basic knowlegde of partial differential equations and linear algebra, as well as fundamentals in classical mechanics and fluid mechanics is highly desirable.
Inhalt: The lecture will cover fundamental theories of balanced and unbalanced modes of atmospheric motion and will discuss secondary circulations as a response to perturbations of balance. Specifically, we will discuss: - balanced and unbalanced motion in the shallow water model - 3D quasi-geostrophic theory and the omega equation - baroclinic instability - Eliassen secondary circulation - 3D Rossby waves - internal gravity waves - 3D and 2D turbulence
