Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: The main assignments will be short readings and short writing assignments requiring the understanding and reproduction of different varieties of English. The final assignment will be the very brief presentation of a poster (sharable, explanatory visual image) that explains a sociolinguistic problem related to global variation in the English language.
Inhalt: The course will discuss the norms of British and American Standard English, the distinctive varieties of English spoken and written in postcolonial countries, and patterns in the use of English as a lingua franca among non-native speakers. In each case, we will learn to identify the linguistic markers of these varieties as well as discussing the publishing environments or social circumstances in which different varieties are used. Historical reasons for the ascendence of different varieties will also be considered.
