Inhalt: In this colloquium, we will work our way through Kortmann's (2020) English Linguistics. Essentials. 2nd ed. (required reading). This book will form the basis for in-class discussions and presentations about how to teach linguistics contents and do linguistics exercises in EFL schoolbooks (schoolyears 5-10). Yes, you need English linguistics for school. In fact, you will teach virtually nothing but linguistics (aka grammar, vocab, word-structure and sounds, etc.) until you start teaching about the American Dream or read Shakespeare with your pupils. In this course, we will - review important relevant terminology and concepts you will need as EFL teachers - show how the relevant exercises could be incorporated in an EFL lesson - discuss how you can use lay terminology where necessary to explain the linguistic concepts. Course requirements: - active participation - to do BEFORE each session: required reading, pose comprehension questions (if applicable) on-line (ILIAS), fill in key terms list and bring to class - portfolio (to be handed in at the end of the semester) - in class: participate (ask questions, engage in discussions) - B.Ed. students need to prepare and guide their fellow students through one in-class exercise (pretend school lesson) - oral exam in week 14 (15’): a set of schoolbook exercises will be presented to you, and you need to be able to tell me (a) what the respective exercise is about using appropriate linguistic terminology, and (b) why it is relevant for EFL settings
