Anwesenheitspflicht: There will be regular quizzes/assignments to check your active participation.
Inhalt: This class will dedicate itself to the study of the Robinsonade, i.e. the desert-island castaway narrative. Starting with the first novel in English, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, we will investigate the text's creative reception in the 18th century before moving on to 20th-century texts interested in what the Robinsonade has to say about human nature and the West's colonial heritage.
Empfohlene Literatur: If you intend to take this class, get hold of any unabridged edition of Robinson Crusoe and start reading as soon as possible. Other texts to be acquired and read by you are: JG Ballard, Concrete Island JM Coetzee, Foe Additional texts will be provided.
Digitale Lehre: Some course material will be provided on Moodle, but note that this is a face-to-face class that will not be fully replicated online.
