Inhalt: "Life is not a series of gig lamps", writes Virginia Woolf in her essay “Modern Fiction”, and it has possibly become the phrase most often quoted to convey the central disagreement between realist and modernist forms of fiction. In this class, we are going to consider a selection of realist and modernist narrative texts from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century in order to pinpoint differences, trace developments, and along the way ascertain a thorough grasp of (mainly) narratological instruments of textual analysis.
