Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Mental illness and health have been shifting categories in the United States as biology, evolutionary theory, and sociology redefine themselves and come into contact with activism, capitalism, and politics. In this class, we will use a feminist science studies lens to approach the history of classification of mental ability in the 20th century, including modules on eugenics, the biologization of violence, and the medicalization of sexuality and gender identity. We will look at representations of mental wellness and illness in film, art, literature, and history, as we are guided by disability studies, feminist and queer theory, and critical race studies.
