Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: It is strongly recommended that students have successfully completed a proseminar and term paper in (American) literary studies before registering for this class. This class is required course work in modules: - GMK V (major): active participation + term paper - AMK II (major): active participation - GMB II (minor): active participation + term paper This class can also be taken as an elective in module AMK II by students majoring in the BA English Literature and Culture.
Inhalt: In this seminar students will explore how plays by contemporary American dramatists represent and mediate different forms of violence. In particular, we will study how playwrights rely on traditional dramatic styles, conventions, and genres such as tragedy and melodrama, the lynching play, and different revolutionary traditions in American theatre and drama.
